From the Better Late Than Never files … Wizard Online posted an interview with Collin Chou and John Fusco that went down during the Forbidden Kingdom presentation at Wizard World last month at the Los Angeles Convention Center!! Wizard also posted a full recap of the event.
Excerpts and more after the cut!
Imagine being John Fusco, a student and fan of martial arts, and getting to experience this…
We had to slow down the video playback to look at what Jet and Jackie were doing. And for me, being a student of Kung Fu, it was just fascinating to watch all this. It was this moving database of styles. I had written a lot of this stuff that the master took and did his own stuff with, but some of it involved storyline and dialogue, and I indicated Praying Mantis and it was so exciting for me to watch Jet’s version of authentic Praying Mantis.
Watching all of these guys, I picked up things. Collin has what they call “Kung Fu eyes.” His use of his eyes—almost using them like a weapon. When you use those in forms, it makes the forms more beautiful. And Jackie’s Drunken style—some of my Shaolin forms have elements of Drunken style in it—and I just watched him to get that tempo.
So, I was always studying. And Jet, on the other hand, is so philosophical. When I was in Hong Kong with him, I had hinted around and said, “You know, I’m here and I’d like to train.” And he said, “Uh-huh.” And I asked, “Is there a master you can recommend?” He thought about it and he said, “The best master, you’ll find tomorrow morning five o’clock out in the park right out here.” I said, “Really?” And he said, “Yes,” and [pointed to himself]. So, I was out there doing Taiji. [Laughs]
